The Board of Cooperative
Educational Services of Nassau County Nassau BOCES is governed by
a nine-member Board elected by the county's 56 local school district
boards. Each member is elected for a three-year term, and three seats are
voted upon each year.
George Farber, President
(2010)
Mr.
Farber passed away on June 23, 2009. A Board member since 1971, George Farber served as President since
1987, and was formerly District Clerk and Vice President. His school board
record included nine years on the Herricks Board of Education, with eight as
President. He was a voting delegate to the New York State School
Boards Association (NYSSBA) and a member of its nominating committee.

Iris
Wolfson, Vice President

Mrs.
Wolfson passed away on June 10, 2009.
For 30
years, she was an integral member of the Nassau BOCES Board and a strong
advocate of public education both in Nassau County and throughout the
state. Wolfson was a Nassau BOCES Board member since 1979 and was
named Vice President in 2006. She served on the Hicksville Board of
Education from 1973 to 1979 and was its President from 1975 to 1977.

Stephen
B. Witt, District Clerk

Stephen Witt has been a Nassau BOCES Board member since 1996. He was
recently named District Clerk and is Chairman of the Audit Committee. He has
served as President, Vice President and Treasurer of the Nassau-Suffolk
School Boards Association and was the recipient of its Distinguished
Service Award. He continues to serve on its Executive Committee.
Witt is also a member of the Hewlett-Woodmere School Board, serving
most recently since July of 2003. He had previously been on the
Hewlett-Woodmere School Board from 1984-1996, where he served in the
capacity of both member and vice president. He has been awarded that
district’s Distinguished Service Award.
In 1997, the Governor of New York appointed him as the school-board
representative to the STAR Cash Flow Commission. In 2008, the New York
State Commissioner of Education appointed Witt to represent school board
members on the Integrated Algebra Measurement Commission. He also has
served on the Commissioner's Advisory Council, the Long Island
Educational Coalition, and the Long Island Association's Regional
Advisory Board.
He was on the Board of Directors of the New York State School Boards
Association (NYSSBA) and has served on many of its ad-hoc committees,
including the Committee on Alternative Means of Funding, the Resolutions
Committee, Task Force on Dues Structure and the Teacher Quality Task
Force. Witt is presently on the Investment Advisory Committee, and is an
Ambassador for NYSSBA representing Nassau County School Districts. He
formerly served as a member of the State and Federal Legislative Network
and has authored
three articles for On Board, the NYSSBA Journal, titled "How to
Prepare an Effective Budget," "A Modest Teacher Appraisal Proposal," and
"The Case for Extracurricular Activities." Witt has been
awarded the NYSSBA Distinguished Service Award.
Witt received the Tri-M Honor Society Honorary Lifetime Membership
Award, the Lifetime PTA Membership Award, and the President’s Volunteer
Service Award presented by the President’s Council on Service and Civic
Participation. He holds a B.S. in accounting and an M.B.A. He is a
retired executive of J.P. Morgan and Citigroup. In addition, he coaches
football, basketball and lacrosse at Hewlett High School and is a member
of Peninsula Kiwanis where he serves as the Liaison to Hewlett High
School’s Key Club.
Eric
B. Schultz, Vice District Clerk

Eric B. Schultz has been a member of the Nassau BOCES Board since 2001 and
was recently appointed Vice District Clerk. He
was a member of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Board of Education from July
1988 to June 2000, where he held the positions of President and Vice
President. Mr. Schultz has presided over and presented at numerous state
and local conferences. He is a past member and Chairperson of the New York
State School Boards Association Resolutions Committee. In 2000, Mr.
Schultz received the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association's
(N-SSBA)Distinguished Board Services Award and, from 1993 to 2000, he served as a
member of its Executive Committee. He is a graduate of Brooklyn College, C.U.N.Y., and Brooklyn Law School. Since 1998, Mr. Schultz has headed his
own law firm specializing in civil litigation and real estate law, and
serving as corporate counsel to businesses including cooperative
corporations.
Susan
Bergtraum
(2009)
Susan Bergtraum has been a Nassau BOCES Board member since July
2006.
She is a member of the Board of Directors for the New York State School
Boards Association (NYSSBA), where she also serves as chair of the
NYSSBA Student Health and Safety Task Force, and is a member of the
State Legislative Network.
Bergtraum is a past President and Vice President of the Nassau-Suffolk
School Boards Association (N-SSBA), and currently sits on N-SSBA's
Executive, Legislation, Finance, and Member Board-in-Service committees.
She was a member of the East Williston Board from 1991 to 2006 and is
the co-founder and a trustee of the East Williston Educational
Foundation. She is also a trustee for the Wheatley Scholarship Fund.
Bergtraum sits on the Roslyn Country Club Civic Association’s Board of
Directors and is the co-author of “Playing it Safe.” She has been
honored for her commitment to education by several organizations,
including the Center for Prejudice Reduction, which awarded her the
Detective Joe Zito Memorial Award in 2002. Other awards include the
Friends of Education Award and the Council of Administrators and
Supervisors Award.
Bergtraum completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at
Queens College; she received her bachelor’s in education and her
master’s in school psychology. She has taught in both New York City and
Washington, D.C.
Deborah Coates
(2011)
The newest Nassau BOCES board member, Deborah Coates, was elected in
2008. A public education advocate, she has served as president and vice
president of the East Meadow Union Free School District Board of
Education. She also was a member of the Nassau BOCES Budget Advisory
Committee.
Coates has been a member of the East Meadow district’s PTAs for more
than two decades and has received numerous honors for her work,
including the National PTA Leadership Award.
She is an active community member, serving as vice president of the
Community Association of Stewart Avenue and as chairperson of the Nassau
County Jail Advisory Committee. She also is a member of a local chapter
of Kiwanis International and the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce.
Additionally, Coates has served on the board of directors for Reform
Education Finance Inequities Today (REFIT) since 2004.
Professionally, Coates is a certified medical assistant and office
manager.
Ronald
Ellerbe
(2010)
Ronald J. Ellerbe was elected to the Nassau BOCES Board by local school
districts in September 2007.
Ellerbe has been a Board member for the Freeport Public Schools since
1996, has served as vice president since 2006, and was president from
2000 to 2001. Ellerbe chairs the legislative, safety and budget
committees. He is active in the New York State School Boards Association
(NYSSBA), where he sits on the resolutions and State Legislative Network
committees.
A well-known advocate for education on Long Island, Ellerbe is a member
of Nassau-Suffolk School Board Association's (N-SSBA) executive board and
has served on several committees, including the legislative and finance
committees. He currently chairs the nominating committee and also serves
as the association's representative to the Nassau BOCES Career and
Technical Education committee. Additionally, Ellerbe is the president of
Reform Education Finance Inequities Today (REFIT).
Ellerbe is a graduate of Fordham University and holds a master's in
public administration from Long Island University, C. W. Post. He also
has a Master of Boardsmanship from NYSSBA.
Gale
Ross-Srulevich
(2010)
Gale Ross-Srulevich has proudly served as a member of the Nassau BOCES
Board since 1998. From 1990 to 2001, she served on the Lawrence Board of
Education, where she was its Vice President.
Ross-Srulevich joined the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association (N-SSBA)
in 1991. She has served on the Executive Committee, chaired and
co-chaired the Legislation Committee, and served on the Budget Committee
and the Distinguished Award Committee.
Ross-Srulevich is involved with the New York State (NYSSBA) and National
(NSBA) School Boards Associations, and has been a member of numerous
ad-hoc committees including Universal Pre-K and Early Childhood
Education. In the NSBA, she became an Ambassador for the National
Affiliate Advocacy Network in 2000 and served on the School Board of
Tomorrow E-mail Group and the Technology + Learning Focus Group. She was
also a member of the Federal Relations Network. The Lawrence Board of
Education selected her to serve on the NYSSBA President's Council.
Ross-Srulevich has presented at conventions, conferences, and workshops
sponsored by the Association of Educational Service Agencies (AESA), the
American Association of School Administrators (AASA), NSBA, NYSSBA and
N-SSBA, on such topics as “Charter Schools and Their Impact,”
“Board/Superintendent Relations,” “New Board Member Orientation,” and
"Politics with a Small p.” She contributes to AESA conventions and its
Legislation Network.
Ross-Srulevich served as Governor of the Lawrence Association and as
Trustee of the Five Towns Community Center, Tempo and the YM & YWCA. She
joined Friends of Oyster Bay and became a sustaining member of the
Nassau County Museum of Art and the Tilles Center.
Michael
Weinick
(2009)
Michael Weinick was elected to the Nassau BOCES Board in 2003. He served on the Merrick UFSD Board of Education from
September 1986 through June 2002, and was also a member of the
Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Board from July 2000 to June 2002. He has been an
active member of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, having
served on the Executive Committee (July 2000–June 2002), Finance Committee
(July 2000–June 2002), and Distinguished Service Award Committee (July
2001–June 2002).
Weinick is a graduate of Brooklyn College, holds a
Master's Degree from Long Island University, and has a professional diploma
from C.W. Post. His educational credentials include New York City and New
York State teaching and administrative certifications.
Weinick was the Assistant Principal at the Herbert S. Eisenberg Intermediate
School #303 in Brooklyn from 1984 to 2005. He taught at
this school for 12 years before being appointed as the Assistant
Principal. Weinick currently serves as a consultant to the New York City
schools.
