One of the reading tools growing in popularity is the Lexile framework developed by Metametrics . They maintain a free database on their web site www.lexile.com where teachers can locate the reading levels of tens of thousands of books. Also available is a Lexile Analyzer that you can use to analyze the reading level of any piece of text.

Reading is Fundamental - Reading, particularly at the secondary level is fundamental to student achievement. Yet, little has been done to apply what we know about teaching reading beyond elementary schools. The International Center for Leadership has completed some excellent research in reading levels compared to requirements in the real world and the mismatch between instruction and assessment in high schools.
