ELAP enrolls adolescents from 14 to 21 years old, from a variety of countries. Because they have limited or interrupted schooling, they are below grade level in many areas- even in their native languages. These students do not usually benefit from a typical English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
Instructors take the teenager's existing knowledge and link it to a more complex academic curriculum. The program includes ESL social studies, ESL math, ESL science, English, pre-employability and word processing skills. Outcomes depend on how old students are when they enter the program, along with their academic achievement levels and personal goals. Many will need access to the educational system until age 21. In every case, each student's progress is discussed with the home and a graduation/vocational plan agreed on.
