Ashley Markiewicz, of Massapequa, received a “perfect score” on her portfolio by the New York State Art Teachers Association as part of a program called “The Portfolio Project.” She is a junior at Massapequa High School and a visual arts student at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School of the Arts.
Ashley participated in the program "to see how her portfolio measured up when judged by an impartial adjudicator,” according to her art teacher Rae Raff. “One of the judges expressed that Ashley is on her own level; she had to give her a perfect score.” The work in her portfolio consisted of drawings, paintings and sketchbooks. This work was created this year as the core of her senior college admissions portfolio.
“The Portfolio Project is an initiative of the New York State Art Teachers Association that was developed in cooperation with the New York State Education Department. It is an assessment tool that is based on The New York State Learning Standards and provides students with an opportunity to present portfolios of their work at regional adjudication sites. The student portfolios provide evidence of understanding and student learning in the visual arts. Feedback is available for the student, parent, school and community,” according to their website, www.nysata.org/portfolio-project.
